One of the questions g4m3r d00dz like to ask is: so wat r u playin? It’s a fair question; there are lots of excellent games out there and we’re always looking for another one to test our m4d sk1llz. So what’s my newest favorite gaming site?
Yep. I’m telling all my friends about this one. At least, the ones I think might be vaguely interested in it anyway. Heck, I’m even telling people who AREN’T my friends. And this is coming from someone who’s usually extremely picky about what he recommends. You and I both know most of the crappy wanna-be sites out there just don’t pass muster, and that begs the question: what’s so specialĀ about this one?
Sheer fun: There are a lot of little things that add up here, but I can tell the developers are having fun with the site, and it’s contagious. Little phrases such as “We’re in like with you” or “Penguins R so dumb LOL” make me go “WTF?” at first, but after that? I’m wearin’ the silliest grin — evar — for the rest of the day. Plus, the games are usually fairly quick, so you can slide in some pwn4gz on a short break if you don’t have a lot of time.
Variety: While OMGPOP could use some work in this department (give them some time), they already cover a decent mix of action, strategy, and even some puzzle games. They’ve even tossed in some co-op Missile Command if you’re a g4m3r d00d on a nostalgia kick.
Community: I personally think this is where “social gaming” should have gone to begin with. You’re actually engaging with others while you play, not just randoming someone’s screen name on FaceBook or whatever. It’s casual enough to keep things loose while still letting you make friends and talk a little smack.
Penguins: Surprisingly, they rawk. Even if they can’t swim. XD
So what’s not to like? Well… the bandwidth overhead might be a major drawback if you’re stuck in the ’90s on a dialup connection. It will occasionally lag you completely out of a game, in which case, just pick another game room and get ready to lay the smackdown. I’m hoping the developers can optimize something and reduce the lag.
So yeah… this is where I’ve been spending an embarrassing amount of my past week. I’d give OMGPOP 4 out of 5 stars, and I’ll bump it even higher if they’ll cut the lag down and gimmeh some Chess or Backgammon.
I’m Mr_Shades over there — look me up sometime. Wut?
